Thank
you for your continued interest in the 2006-2007 Class Acts program.
Your dedication to the enrichment of our community is an invaluable
resource to Douglas County, and we appreciate your participation.
We also extend a special thank you to two special Principal Grant
Winners for the month of March:
Susan Chandler Solon Springs Schools
Gym Safety, School Pride
As principal at Solon Springs, Susan Chandler works diligently
to do what is best for the students, faculty and wellbeing of
the school. Currently, the Solon Springs Booster Club and PTA
have been working on a project to maintain safety for the students,
while enhancing the appearance of the school. The main gymnasium
needs new protective mats for the west and east walls as they
are frayed and often cause interruptions by frequently falling
on the floor due to wear and tear. The mats were originally installed
as a safety measure to protect students from colliding with concrete
and metal at both ends of the gym and have since become a hindrance.
Class Acts! awarded Solon Springs a special Principal Grant to
help purchase new mats with the school emblem/logo screened on
one of the mats to enhance school pride. The grant will benefit
the entire school and community since the gym is utilized throughout
the school year for physical education classes, concerts, graduation,
assemblies and other major events.
Dennis Mertzig Great Lakes Elementary
Distance Learning Project
Principal Dennis Mertzig, would like his students to be able
to communicate through current technology to sister elementary
schools in Alaska, Hawaii and potentially Afghanistan. This experience
will enable his students to use technology as a communication/learning
tool, which prepares them for excelling in the future. Along
with the PTA and library media coordinator, Dennis has been working
on a plan to bring this experience to the students of Great Lakes
Elementary. Class Acts! awarded Great Lakes Elementary a special
Principal Grant to purchase technology for this exciting distance
learning project. The equipment purchased will provide immediate
video and voice feed between the students of Great Lakes and
their sister elementary schools, benefiting students throughout
the nation and world.
These principals, who continually dedicate their time to Douglas Students,
will each receive a $1,000 grant.
